Post Harvest Operations in Agricultural Science Directory

Provides information on harvesting, transport, threshing, drying, cleaning, packaging and storage. Bran is separated by fan aspiration as the grain revolves between the abrasive disks. The extent of dehulling depends on the size, moisture content and hardness of the grain, the dwell time in the machine and the speed and surface characteristics of the carborundum disk. Hard varieties can yield a pearled sorghum product similar to rice, whereas soft floury endosperm varieties can shatter in the machine producing a coarse flour. Bran removed from the dehulling can be used as an animal feed.
