Fruit Production in the midAtlantic region has a long history, dating to Colonial times in Virginia with pomological and viticultural efforts by founders such as Thomas Jefferson and George Washington. Today, Virginia ranks approximately sixth in the nation for apple production about 18,600 acres. There are about 1,404 acres of peach, 2,360 acres of grape, and about 1,200 acres of strawberry, 300 acres each of caneberries and blueberry.
