Californias integrated pest management program. The development of synthetic pest control chemicals during and after World War II, in combination with improvements in application technology, dramatically increased the potential for farmers to control insects, pathogens, weeds and nematode pests. Pest control researchers, government agencies, and the agricultural industry overwhelmingly embraced and perfected the technology. California growers were no exception. The rapid expansion of Californias agriculture and its ability to produce a variety of high value fruits and vegetables made pesticides an important and economical way of reducing production risks and increasing yields.
