An increasing need for improved erosion prediction technology was recognized by the major research and action agencies of the United States Departments of Agriculture and Interior in the early 1980s. In 1985 these agencies embarked on a 10 year research and development effort to replace the Universal Soil Loss Equation. The Water Erosion Prediction Project WEPP has the objective to develop new generation water erosion prediction technology for use by the USDASoil Conservation Service, USDAForest Service, USDIBureau of Land Management, and other organizations involved in soil and water conservation and environmental planning and assessment.
